Cord sizes explained
Firewood sellers use a few different terms, so it helps to know them.
- Full cord: 4 ft × 4 ft × 8 ft stacked (128 cubic feet)
- Half cord: 64 cubic feet stacked
- Quarter cord: 32 cubic feet stacked
- Face cord or 'rick': one row of 16-inch logs, 4 ft × 8 ft, about one-third of a full cord
Stacked vs. dumped
Loose, dumped wood takes up more space than stacked wood. A delivered cord will look bigger in a pile than it does once stacked.
How much do you need?
It depends on your stove and how often you burn. Many homes that burn on cold evenings use one to two cords a winter; homes heating mainly with wood use more.
