Signs of Dutch elm disease
Look for leaves on one or more branches that suddenly wilt, curl and turn yellow or brown in early summer.
- Wilting, yellowing leaves on individual branches ('flagging')
- Brown streaks under the bark of affected branches
- Dieback spreading through the crown
What to do
Infected elms should be removed promptly and the wood disposed of properly. Don't store elm firewood with the bark on, because it can harbor the beetles that spread the disease.
